The Ladies of Charity annual Coats for the Community serving the residents of Cohoes, Watervliet, Waterford and Green Island took place on Friday, October 25, and Saturday, October 26, 2019. The ensuing weather held off just long enough for the residents to receive warm coats, sweaters, fleece, sweatshirts, hats and mittens/gloves to ward off the cold.
This year we served 196 households in the two days of the coat drive. This includes coats for infants to senior citizens. The shoppers were so grateful and happy with the warm weather gear that they receive.
People were so generous this year with their donations that we were able to donate the remaining coats to several local organizations such as outreach programs for the elementary schools that needed coats, Mary’s Corner, Street Soldiers, the Giving Room, Catholic Charities, Pastor Charlie in the South End and others.
The agencies in Cohoes were very helpful and supportive with any problems that arose for us. Beth at the Senior Center provided us with a wonderful place for the shoppers to wait before selecting their coats. Amanda at City Hall helped us find a spot in the library basement to store the coats before they were displayed at the Senior Center. And Kathy at City Housing Authority found us a place to store the coat racks and supplies until next year. A big thank you to these ladies.
It takes the combined effort of the many volunteers to collect and deliver the coats, transport and set up the coat racks and move the coats. Then volunteers must sort and display the coats and help the shoppers choose their coats. When the shopping is finished, everything has to be dismantled. The coats are again sorted and given to the different agencies, the racks are transported to storage and everything is restored to order at the Senior Center. All of these wonderful volunteers make this the huge successful event that it is.
Beth and I want to thank all of you for your help to improve the lives of the shoppers. May God bless all of you.
